Biography Introduction

As the Founder, President, and Chairman of the Board of Directors for Columbia College, Tom’s professional journey has been deeply-rooted in his dedication to education and community service. His prominence in the world of post-secondary education has been driven not just his commitment to excellence, but a profound desire to assist others in achieving success. Living by a simple but powerful mantra: I live to help people

Early years in Education

Tom started on his educational journey at the University of Lethbridge Faculty of Arts and Science in 1970. Intrigued by the field of special education, he transferred to a five-year joint B.A. and B.Ed. program. This educational path laid the foundation for his future endeavors in the field of education.

In January 1974, Tom moved to Calgary, where he joined the Calgary Board of Education as a special education teacher. During this time, he pursued further academic growth and successfully completed his Master’s Degree in Educational Administration in Washington.

In March 1980, Tom married Nola, marking a significant personal milestone. Shortly thereafter, in June, he was offered a program coordinator position at Mount Royal College, where he managed various programs for special needs adults and taught credit courses for the Faculty of Business.

Leadership at Cypress Hills Community College

In 1984, the Snell family, including their five children, relocated to Saskatchewan, where Tom accepted the role of President and CEO of Cypress Hills Community College (known today as Great Plains College after merger in 2008). His responsibilities included budget development, policy review, and community relations, demonstrating his ability to lead and oversee educational institutions effectively.

Founding Columbia College and Academic Achievements

In 1986, Tom proudly founded Columbia College. Under his leadership, the college flourished to what is now one of the largest private colleges in Alberta. Columbia College consistently produces graduates who achieve some of the highest marks in Canada on national professional exams.

Driven by a commitment to excellence, Tom earned his Doctorate in Higher Education from Nova Southeastern University in Florida in 1995. He has also shared his knowledge by teaching management courses at the University of Calgary, contributing to the development of future leaders. Community Engagement and Achievements

Tom’s dedication extends beyond the realm of education. He is an active member of various provincial committees, engages in community clubs, and volunteers his time to give back to society.

His remarkable contributions have been recognized through several Honours and Recognitions, including most recently being the recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medal in 2023. He is also continuously an invited delegate for various provincial committees and events related to economic development and education.

 

Tom’s life is a testament to the power of education, community engagement, and dedication to excellence. His leadership at Columbia College and his contributions to Alberta’s education sector and community make him a respected figure in the province and beyond.
